Do you love going to the movies for a few hours of mindless entertainment? If so, then steer clear of the following films! Just like the recent hit Inception, which left some moviegoers so confused they saw it a second time just to figure it all out, the movies below were designed to keep you guessing. From psychological roller coasters, like Memento, to confusing symbolism, like Mulholland Dr., one thing's for sure: The 10 movies below will definitely make you go "hmmm."
Inception
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Inception baffled viewers thanks to its "dreams within dreams within dreams" plotline. In it, Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) can access someone's mind while they're sleeping in order to steal their secrets. The film mostly revolves around what Cobb's new client wants: for him to plant an idea in a business rival's mind. It's hard to differentiate dreams from reality and the unanswered questions (what was Mal's secret, anyway?) will leave you scratching your head. Photo courtesy of allmoviephotos.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
After a rough breakup, a couple, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, has each other erased from their memories. The result? A brilliant jumbled up mish-mash of scenes from their relationship, presented to the viewer out of chronological order, providing an unusual musing on the meaning of love. The only thing that's totally clear in the end is director Michel Gondry's take on matters of the heart since, memory or no memory, the two lovers end up right where they started. The Matrix Revolutions
The final installment of the Wachowski Brothers' sci-fi trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions aimed to tie up all the loose ends regarding its protagonist Neo (Keanu Reeves). As the film zigzags between the real world and the "Matrix," it builds up to what feels like the final epic battle between the machines and humans. However, Neo and Trinity's trip to Machine City leads to a different fight scene—between Neo and Smith—resulting in an unclear (and very unsatisfying!) wrap-up to the fanboy franchise. Donnie Darko
In Donnie Darko, written and directed by Richard Kelly, teen angst meets black holes and parallel universes. A troubled youth is haunted by visions of an evil rabbit who coerces him into committing a series of crimes. The plot's labyrinthine course of events in the end leaves viewers unsure whether the supernatural is at work or merely a young man's increasing insanity. Photo courtesy of allmoviephotos.
Vanilla Sky
This remake of the Spanish film Abre los ojos ("Open your eyes") is essentially about what happens when David Aames (Tom Cruise), a man with looks and money, loses it all. But even that doesn't truly explain it. Roger Ebert wrote that Vanilla Sky "has one of those plots that doubles back on itself like an Escher staircase. You get along splendidly one step at a time, but when you get to the top floor you find yourself on the bottom landing." And by the end, you're not sure what is reality and what is a figment of the imagination. Photo courtesy of allmoviephotos.
Mulholland Dr.
Between characters with shifting identities, mysterious midgets and an ethereal cowboy who appears and reappears to talk in riddles, David Lynch's Mullholland Dr. is nearly impossible to make sense of. Like, what does that blue box mean? But apparently, therein lies the charm. Despite the puzzling plot, critics praised the film: Roger Ebert wrote "the movie is a surrealist dreamscape in the form of a Hollywood film noir, and the less sense it makes, the more we can't stop watching it." Memento
Christopher Nolan must enjoy making mind-bending films, considering that almost a decade before Inception, he wrote and directed Memento, a mystery thriller about a man who, suffering from short-term memory loss, hunts for his wife's murderer with the help of clues he leaves himself and has to re-learn every day. Because the film unfolds backwards, viewers know the future before the past is revealed and every twist and turn is meant to disorient. Photo courtesy of allmoviephotos.
Fight Club
In David Fincher's psychological thriller Fight Club (based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel), Edward Norton plays a man who is bored to tears with his dull, bourgeois existence. When he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), he's instantly drawn into a secret society of addictive and aggressive fighting. But despite all the twists and turns, the end gives viewers the biggest shock of all when they find out things are not what they seem—and not everyone is who they think they are in this testosterone-heavy fantasy. Pi
You know how pi never ends? Well, that's the premise of Pi, Darren Aronofsky's raw, low-budget psychological thriller. In it, every letter of the Hebrew alphabet corresponds with a number, so pi unrounded is the name of God and therefore the key to the universe (confused yet?). The protagonist is Maximillian Cohen, a mathematical genius who locks himself in a room with a computer trying to crack the code of pi. The film takes you on a journey through the mad maze of Maximillian's obsessive mind and explores the fine line between genius and insanity. Photo courtesy of YouTube.
Jacob's Ladder
Adrian Lyne's film (written by Bruce Joel Rubin) is about a traumatized Vietnam War veteran and left Roger Ebert "reeling with turmoil and confusion." The main character, played by Tim Robbins, is trying to keep his life together amid terrifying flashbacks and hallucinations. The struggle leaves him—and the viewers––floating in the gray space between delusions and reality with an ending that proves things aren't always what they seem. Photo courtesy of YouTube.
